Microscopy for the Beekeeper
Microscopy is an indespensible technique to the informed beekeeper. Not only can it enable the identification of pollen and subsequently the source of a particular honey but it can be used to diagnose important bee diseases.
Disease Identification
Honeybees can suffer from a range of diseases and when these reach epizootic proportions the hive must receive appropriate treatment to prevent further damage. In the most serious of cases the hive can quickly succome without intervention. The responsible beekeeper has a duty to their bees and also their fellow beekeeper to be aware of and be able to diagnose and subsequently treat common bee dieseases.
Two common bee diseases namely Acarine (caused by the Acarapis woodi mite) and Nosema (caused by Nosema apis or Nosema Ceranae) require examination using high magnification to enable a reliable diagnosis.
